Top 10 Toothache Home Remedies For A Temporary Fix

Ask anyone who has had a toothache and you will hear about symptoms ranging from mild soreness to unbearable pain and everything between.

Toothaches always seem to happen at the worst possible times too, such as during a dinner party, on vacation or during an important meeting for work.

While there is not a home remedy that will fix the cause of a toothache, there are many household items that may help you bear the pain if you can’t see an emergency dentist or while waiting to visit your normal general or cosmetic dentist.

The directions for using these natural remedies are all the same: Apply products to the problem area and/or swish liquids around the affected area as much as possible for temporary relief of pain or discomfort.

Remember NOT to swallow the mixtures after treatment because they may contain bacteria and foreign particles from the abscessed tooth that should not be ingested. Here are a few tips you can follow to help the pain of a toothache:

  1. Whiskey: Maybe one of the oldest home remedies, whiskey has both numbing and antibacterial properties that can work as temporary relief for a bad tooth.  For best results soak a cotton ball and place on the affected tooth.
  1. Extracts: Similar to alcohols, extracts such as vanilla, almond, and peppermint contain numbing and antibacterial properties delivering similar results. Most people have vanilla extract at home. For best results soak a cotton ball and place on the affected tooth.
  1. Oils: Tea Tree, Clove, Oregano and Coconut oil, while not creating a numbing sensation, can still temporarily stop the throbbing feeling associated with toothaches while cleaning the area of food particles that can cause tooth sensitivity and pain.

Top Tip: For the best results mix a few drops of tea tree oil with coconut or oregano oil; a little bit goes a long way.

  1. Sea Salt: This is one of the most common home remedies. Mix sea salt and water to make a saline solution mouthwash and swish around the bad tooth for as long as possible. Repeat this step until the pain is lessened or you can see a dentist. Some people also add black pepper to this cocktail for additional benefits.
  1. Apple Cider Vinegar: This is another common household item that can provide some relief. Soak a cotton ball and apply to the bad tooth as needed. I would recommend this is a better option than using whiskey (just don’t tell your grandpa).
  1. Tea: If you have ever had your wisdom teeth out, you might have heard this one before. After making a cup of tea, let the bag cool and place the bag directly onto the troubled area and apply light pressure by biting down. The tannins in the tea will act as a numbing agent until you can see a dentist.
  1. Wheatgrass: Wheatgrass juice is said to work wonders on nearly any ailment. The oxygen from the plant with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties make swishing with wheatgrass juice a good practice no matter what.

  1. Ice: Ice is a great way to alleviate pain and slow down bacteria from spreading. Using a warm pack can actually make matters worse by increasing bacteria growth in the mouth. Be careful not to crunch on the ice cubes by mistake, which could damage the tooth more.
  1. Hydrogen Peroxide: Using hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash can help your mouth in many ways. Some people use HP as a daily mouthwash for whiter teeth, fewer canker sores in the mouth and to halt tooth decay. Mix 50/50 with water for a more pleasant experience. Don’t forget to rinse with clean water afterwards.
  1.  Ginger Root: Known as a potent natural pain killer, ginger root can help the pain of a toothache fade away by blocking pain receptors to the brain. Chew the root on the side of your mouth without the pain–once rendered into a paste, move the root to the affected area.

These home remedies should help you cope with the pain until you can see a dentist. Remember: You can schedule a dentist appointment, but you can’t schedule when you will get a toothache, so it’s a good idea to maintain good oral health so you don’t get a toothache to begin with.
