What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide the supportive framework for replacement teeth, functioning as artificial tooth roots. They are a lasting and durable solution for patients with missing or declining teeth because they function just like natural teeth in terms of how they look, feel, and fit.

Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth or many. Your oral surgeon can replace a full arch of teeth on both the top and the bottom if needed. The titanium in the implant fuses with the jaw bone over time, creating a solid anchor for replacement teeth with no slippage or unwanted movement as is common with dentures. Additionally, patients are able to eat all the foods they normally enjoy and smile freely with confidence.

Dental Implants have Three Components:

The implant

This is the titanium screw that replaces the tooth root and permanently fuses with the jawbone.

The abutment

This is the support piece that will hold the new tooth or set of teeth.

The crown

This is the visible replacement tooth, typically made from zirconium or porcelain.

What Are Your Dental Implant Options?

Your choices for dental implants are almost unlimited. You can replace one tooth, a few teeth, or your entire upper or lower set of teeth. Contact us to learn more about what may be the right option for you.

Single Dental Implants

A single dental implant is ideal if you have one missing tooth. In this procedure, we will install one tooth and top it off with a crown that looks just like the rest of your natural teeth.

Multiple Dental Implants

If you're missing more than one tooth and the surrounding teeth are healthy, we will most likely place two new teeth and attach appropriate crowns. Your new implants will be surrounded by your natural teeth and should be indistinguishable.

All-On-Four and All-On-Six Dental Implants

If you need to replace a complete set of teeth, we typically go for an option known as All-on-four or All-on-six. In this procedure, we install an arch of teeth that looks & feels natural. All-on-four and All-on-six are great options as convenient alternatives to dentures.

The Dental Implant Experience

If you're already missing a tooth, we can move straight to preparing for the replacement. If you have a badly damaged tooth or old dental work that needs to be removed, we'll address that and start the new treatments as soon as you recover.

Once you are ready for placement of implants, we will insert the anchor—in some cases, we may have to do a bone graft to ensure your jaw has enough stable bone to support the new tooth. Afterward, we will put a temporary healing cap on the new tooth to let it heal. As your body heals, your natural bone cells fuse with the anchor—one of the reasons they are so strong and durable.

Getting Your New Teeth

After you've healed, we install the abutment, which is the base that will hold your natural-looking crown. Healing time for this part of the procedure is minimal ( 6 months of healing time for implants placed in the upper jaw and 4 months of healing time for implants placed in the lower jaw). After the healing time has passed is it is closely followed by attaching the crown securely to the abutment. The result is a gorgeous new tooth—or teeth—that looks and feels natural in every capacity.
